As part of our Youth Arts Institute, each month, Charter Oak Cultural Center holds Read It and Sleep, a family reading program that invites neighborhood children and their families to hear a story read to them by a community leader or a local author, enjoy healthy snacks and take home a copy of the book for their families to read together- all free of charge. Each year, the program serves about 200 children and caregivers from the low-income neighborhood where Charter Oak is housed and we have recently linked the program with our popular monthly family dinners. One of the main goals of Read It and Sleep is to build family literacy in a fun and engaging way that fosters a deep connection with the book that is read. The hope is that this connection will continue to grow as families read the book at home and that interest in reading will increase overall. Some examples of books read this past year include:
There was An Old Lady Who Swallowed A Fly by Pam Adams
The True Story of the Three Little Pigs by Lane Smith and Jon Scieszka
Why Mosquitoes Buzz in People’s Ears: A West African Tale by Verna Aardema, Leo Dillon and Diane Dillon
Snowzilla by Janet Lawler
