In 2002, Donna Berman, Executive Director of Charter Oak Cultural Center, initiated the formation of the Charter Oak Dance Coalition, providing a performance home for a diverse group of area dance makers. Since then, Charter Oak has become a place where people of all ages and socioeconomic backgrounds have experienced the joy of dance as students, as performers, and as witnesses to the breadth and depth of dance’s transformative power. Late last summer, Donna sparked a movement among the coalition’s professional dance companies, infusing the group with a renewed spirit of cooperation and planting the seeds of what is now being called Homegrown Dance: a local movement.
