The Hartford Financial Services Group Awards $100,000 to Charter Oak Cultural Center

for Youth Programming

Hartford, CT – Charter Oak Cultural Center’s Youth Arts Institute, over the past ten years, has grown to offer instruction in dance, theatre, visual arts and much more. Charter Oak’s Youth Arts Institute serves over 1,000 Hartford students each year with out-of-school time arts programming that is completely free to children and their families and also provides healthy snacks and nutritious meals.

Charter Oak is proud to announce that they will receive a $100,000 grant from The Hartford Financial Services Group, made through the Connecticut Neighborhood Assistance Act (NAA) Tax Credit Program. The grant will allow the Center to expand its after-school programs. Donna Berman, Charter Oak’s Executive Director – who started the Youth Arts Institute 10 years ago with just five children – says, “This grant will allow us to, among other things, partner with the Hartt Symphony Orchestra to develop rich, sophisticated music programming for our students. This is an extremely generous gift and we are deeply grateful to The Hartford for their tireless commitment to Charter Oak, and to this community.”

“By investing in the Charter Oak Cultural Center, The Hartford is expressing its commitment to educating and to preparing local students to be successful,” said Ron Apter, vice president and assistant general counsel of The Hartford and a member of Charter Oak’s board of directors. “We applaud the Youth Arts Institute’s mission to provide local youth with access to important cultural programs.”

This funding will allow Charter Oak Cultural Center to expand its offerings to Hartford students through a partnership with the Hartt School of Music.  Charter Oak’s Youth Arts Institute will provide concerts that will introduce students – many for the first time – to the experience of attending a professional music performance.  Moreover, this partnership will enable Charter Oak to offer free individual music lessons, an opportunity many local students might not have had otherwise.
