Connecticut artists of Hispanic
heritage. These artists are teachers, learners,

art reflects not only different cultures, life
experiences and individual
expressions, but the commonality of their journeys,
explorations and

Unconstitutional, an hour-long documentary detailing

way that civil liberties of American citizens

film looking at hate-radio talk shows and the

Sheldon/Charter Oak Neighborhood and Capitol
Region Education
Council to organize a mural created by 20 talented
young people from
the neighborhood. The festivities will feature
music and refreshments. |

Spectrum in Motion Dance Theater Ensemble |

direction of Olivia Davis, this ensemble is
dedicated to people of color and the American
experience and embraces movement from the world's
cultures, celebrating music ranging from classical
to contemporary.

| Tanat L'vat Yiftach: A Ritual
Commemorating Jephthah's Daughter |
|

Join us for this
new ritual for women, which honors the memory
of Jephthah's daughter, a nameless woman who,
according to the biblical book of Judges, was
sacrificed by her warrior father to fulfill
a vow he made to God. This is a mini-retreat
for women to bask in community, and think and
talk together about issues of importance including
the connection between patriarchal religion
and violence against women. Suggested donation,

of Muslims across the nation and in Connecticut
under the USA PATRIOT ACT and the erosion of
the civil liberties of all Americans that this
act represents, Charter Oak Cultural Center,
the Connecticut Civil Liberties Union, American
Friends Service Committee and others have organized
this state-wide rally on the anniversary of
the signing of the PATRIOT ACT to give Connecticut
residents the opportunity to lift their voices
in protest of this legislation that threatens

| GRAVES a HartBeat Ensemble
benefit performance |

Inspired by John Steinbeck's The
Grapes of Wrath, Graves tells the story
of a Hartford family's struggle to survive in
a city reeling from the effects of corporate
globalization. Using realism and hip-hop stylization,
song and choreography, Graves thrusts
the audience into a Hartford where people work
to create a better way of life. After a year
of touring Graves throughout Connecticut, HartBeat
Ensemble is taking their critically acclaimed
show to California. Bon Voyage party at 6 p.m.
with the HartBeat Ensemble Board of Directors.
Refreshments will be provided. $20-$50 sliding
scale; as always at Charter Oak, no one turned

On the Move is a three-part
conversation/demonstration series presented
by the Charter Oak Cultural Center. This first
installment is a chance to try your hand in
the making of a dance masterpiece. Join the
gifted artists of the Charter Oak Dance Coalition,
helping them choose the movement, the music,
the structure and more. With Alexa Melonopoulos
as your guide, you'll create a piece to be performed
that evening. Get inside the "dance matrix"

|

This performance heralds our month-long
celebration of the brilliance of Virginia Woolf,
which we call, "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?
(We're not!)" Mezzo-soprano Patricia Ruggles
and pianist John Charles Schucker, both from
the New York metropolitan area, are joined by
English actress, Judith Jenkins, to present
a vivid portrait of Virginia Woolf in words
and song. At the center of this performance
is contemporary American composer Dominick Argento's
Pulitzer Prize-winning setting of Woolf's intensely
personal thoughts as set forth in her diaries.

and Hope |

Music of Remembrance and
Hope reflects on the tragic events of the Holocaust
and honors those persecuted and lost, but also
celebrates the hope of the human spirit. What
emerges from this powerful program of music
and narration is the recognition of music's
life-affirming power, even in the face of absolute
despair. This concert will serve as a prelude
to our Kristallnacht commemoration. $25; discounted

| Interfaith Kristallnacht Remembrance
|

Gather with your neighbors for
a candlelight vigil to remember this night in
1938 when Jewish homes, businesses and synagogues
were vandalized. In this time of growing polarization
and suspicion, join us as we stand together
in solidarity to affirm the gifts and blessings
of diversity. After a brief ceremony at Charter
Oak we will take an approximately 1/4 mile candlelight
walk down Main Street in Hartford, ending up
back at Charter Oak for hot soup, bread and
conversation. The building will remain open
for those who prefer to remain in the sanctuary
for meditation. |

This exhibit will showcase over
20 different views of women created in fiber
art by 20 different artists. The Visions include
"The Three Graces," "Menopausal Meltdown," and
"I Always Wear Make-up When I Go Shopping."
The artists are members of Fiber Revolution
and come from Massachusetts, Connecticut, New
York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Delaware.
Though they are all members of Studio Art Quilt
Associates and all work in fiber, their visions
are widely divergent. A very exciting and provocative
