Charter Oak Cultural Center Summer/Fall 2004 Events

Opening Reception: Nosotros: Diverse, Dispersed and Intense
  This exhibit brings together several Connecticut artists of Hispanic
heritage. These artists are teachers, learners, explorers, and carriers
of culture who express themselves through various mediums. Their
art reflects not only different cultures, life experiences and individual
expressions, but the commonality of their journeys, explorations and
lives. Wine and hors d'oeuvres served.

Unconstitutional
  Kick off our mini-film festival with Robert Greenwald's film
Unconstitutional, an hour-long documentary detailing the shocking
way that civil liberties of American citizens have been infringed upon,
curtailed, and rolled back since 9/11 - all in the name of National
Security. Free admission.
Friday, September 17 7:00 p.m
Radio Rage
  The second installment in our mini-film festival is Radio Rage, a short
film looking at hate-radio talk shows and the consequences of biased
journalism. Written by Nick Checker and Directed by S J Williams.
Following the film will be a panel discussion led by directors Becca
Atkins and S J Williams. $5

Mixed Blessings
  The final installment in our mini-film series, Mixed Blessings, is an
insightful documentary that looks at the challenges of raising children
in an interfaith family. Join us on a journey of faith, courage, conflict
and love. We are delighted that the filmmaker, Jennifer Kaplan, will be
present to facilitate discussion following the film.

Typsy Gypsy Guitar Trio
  Local acoustic guitarists Frank Varela, Rich Goldstein, and Dave
Giardina grace our courtyard with toe-tappin', old-time guitar jazz. In
the style of Django Reinhardt, this trio closes out our free Summer
Courtyard Concert Series.

Mural Unveiling: The Ura Yoan Ortega Mural Project
  This summer we partnered with The Coalition to Strengthen the
Sheldon/Charter Oak Neighborhood and Capitol Region Education
Council to organize a mural created by 20 talented young people from
the neighborhood. The festivities will feature music and refreshments.

Sukkah Decorating Party
  Please come and help us decorate our beautiful sukkah, the booth
built to celebrate the Jewish fall harvest of Sukkot. Refreshments will
be served.

Charter Oak Cultural Center Annual Membership Event
  Following an elegant reception in our gallery including wine and hors
d'oeuvres, our Annual Membership Event will feature many surprises
including "What I did on My Summer Vacation," a multi-media
presentation by our summer muralists, our resident dance company
Spectrum in Motion and the students they mentored this summer. You
will be amazed and proud of what you have helped create and the
lives that you have touched.

Hakbang Ng Bata . . . Baby Steps Spectrum in Motion Dance Theater Ensemble
  This performance explores and celebrates the fact that before we make great strides in life, we take Baby Steps. Under the direction of Olivia Davis, this ensemble is dedicated to people of color and the American experience and embraces movement from the world's cultures, celebrating music ranging from classical to contemporary.

Faith, Politics and the Soul of America
  A lecture presented by Rev. Dr. Andrea Ayvazian, Dean of Religious Life, Mount Holyoke College. Come hear Rev. Dr. Ayvazian's inspiring pre-election reflection. This is the 7th lecture in our series, "Women's Prophetic Voices in a Multi-Cultural World," co-sponsored with Hartford Seminary. Tanat L'vat Yiftach: A Ritual Commemorating Jephthah's Daughter
  Join us for this new ritual for women, which honors the memory of Jephthah's daughter, a nameless woman who, according to the biblical book of Judges, was sacrificed by her warrior father to fulfill a vow he made to God. This is a mini-retreat for women to bask in community, and think and talk together about issues of importance including the connection between patriarchal religion and violence against women. Suggested donation, $10.

Harvest Moon Wine and Cheese Tasting Soirée to Benefit the Charter Oak Cultural Center
  Artisanal cheeses generously provided by Cato Corner Farm in Colchester, Connecticut. Come join wine connoisseur Jorge Herandez from W.J. Deutsch and Sons, as we embark on a journey that will take us through the finest wine growing regions in both the Old and New Worlds. Price includes a raffle ticket. $50.

Speak Up for Freedom Rally at the State Capitol Building
  In response to the harassment of Muslims across the nation and in Connecticut under the USA PATRIOT ACT and the erosion of the civil liberties of all Americans that this act represents, Charter Oak Cultural Center, the Connecticut Civil Liberties Union, American Friends Service Committee and others have organized this state-wide rally on the anniversary of the signing of the PATRIOT ACT to give Connecticut residents the opportunity to lift their voices in protest of this legislation that threatens our very democracy. Target
  New York director and playwright, Ariel Nazryan, has created this moving theatre piece based on the transcripts of recent interviews with members of Connecticut's Muslim community who were investigated and mistreated simply because of their faith. Co-sponsored by the Connecticut Civil Liberties Union. $10, $5 seniors, students, Charter Oak & Let*s Go! members.

GRAVES a HartBeat Ensemble benefit performance
  Inspired by John Steinbeck's The Grapes of Wrath, Graves tells the story of a Hartford family's struggle to survive in a city reeling from the effects of corporate globalization. Using realism and hip-hop stylization, song and choreography, Graves thrusts the audience into a Hartford where people work to create a better way of life. After a year of touring Graves throughout Connecticut, HartBeat Ensemble is taking their critically acclaimed show to California. Bon Voyage party at 6 p.m. with the HartBeat Ensemble Board of Directors. Refreshments will be provided. $20-$50 sliding scale; as always at Charter Oak, no one turned away for lack of funds.

On the Move: Dance Matrix (Unloaded)
  On the Move is a three-part conversation/demonstration series presented by the Charter Oak Cultural Center. This first installment is a chance to try your hand in the making of a dance masterpiece. Join the gifted artists of the Charter Oak Dance Coalition, helping them choose the movement, the music, the structure and more. With Alexa Melonopoulos as your guide, you'll create a piece to be performed that evening. Portrait of Virginia Woolf
  This performance heralds our month-long celebration of the brilliance of Virginia Woolf, which we call, "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? (We're not!)" Mezzo-soprano Patricia Ruggles and pianist John Charles Schucker, both from the New York metropolitan area, are joined by English actress, Judith Jenkins, to present a vivid portrait of Virginia Woolf in words and song. At the center of this performance is contemporary American composer Dominick Argento's Pulitzer Prize-winning setting of Woolf's intensely personal thoughts as set forth in her diaries. $15, $10 students, seniors, Charter Oak & Let*s Go! members.

Concora: Music of Remembrance and Hope
  Music of Remembrance and Hope reflects on the tragic events of the Holocaust and honors those persecuted and lost, but also celebrates the hope of the human spirit. What emerges from this powerful program of music and narration is the recognition of music's life-affirming power, even in the face of absolute despair. This concert will serve as a prelude to our Kristallnacht commemoration. $25; discounted tickets for neighborhood residents available. Please call 249-1207 for more information.

Interfaith Kristallnacht Remembrance
  Gather with your neighbors for a candlelight vigil to remember this night in 1938 when Jewish homes, businesses and synagogues were vandalized. In this time of growing polarization and suspicion, join us as we stand together in solidarity to affirm the gifts and blessings of diversity. After a brief ceremony at Charter Oak we will take an approximately 1/4 mile candlelight walk down Main Street in Hartford, ending up back at Charter Oak for hot soup, bread and conversation. The building will remain open for those who prefer to remain in the sanctuary for meditation.

The Hours
  A showing of the acclaimed film, The Hours, followed by lecture and discussion. This event will mark the culmination of our series of work inspired by Virginia Woolf. Suggested donation, $5.

The San Juan Shakespeare Company
  A farce about the trials and tribulations encountered by a small Latino theatre company attempting to produce "Nuyorican Theatre" in New York City. Performed by New York's Obie Award-winning theatre company, Repertorio Espanol. Tickets: $15, $10 students, seniors, Charter Oak & Let*s Go! members.

  Bring the whole family for face-painting, drumming, arts projects and the foods and symbols of the winter holidays. Suggested donation, $5.

Opening Reception: Visions of Women
  This exhibit will showcase over 20 different views of women created in fiber art by 20 different artists. The Visions include "The Three Graces," "Menopausal Meltdown," and "I Always Wear Make-up When I Go Shopping." The artists are members of Fiber Revolution and come from Massachusetts, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Delaware. Though they are all members of Studio Art Quilt Associates and all work in fiber, their visions are widely divergent. A very exciting and provocative show! Wine and hors d'oeuvres served.

Kwanzaa Day Celebration: Umoja
  Unity 5 p.m.-7 p.m.;
Workshops and Kwanzaa-related activities. 7 p.m.-9 p.m.;
What is Kwanzaa? Lighting of the Knara, drum call, libation to the ancestors, paying homage to the elders. Performances by master dancers and drummers as well as community participation. Refreshments, vendors, local artists. All are invited; this is a free event.
